Walvis Bay Business Leaders Added to Swapo Local Authority Candidate List. Walvis Bay businessman Kobus van Schalwyk, who recently invited Swapo secretary general Sophia Shaningwa to engage on the deteriorating state of the coastal town, has officially been included on Swapo’s local authority candidate list for the upcoming elections.
The development was confirmed by Patrick Bathromeus, Swapo’s Walvis Bay Rural district coordinator, who noted that the party is seeking to strengthen its representation on the local council.
Van Schalwyk, a well-known figure in the Walvis Bay business community, has been vocal about the need to address challenges affecting the town’s growth and development. His inclusion on the list follows his engagement last month with Shaningwa, where concerns over service delivery, infrastructure maintenance, and economic stability were highlighted.
Joining him on the list is fellow businessman Rudolf Westhuizen, another active player in the town’s economic landscape. Their addition underscores Swapo’s strategy of broadening its pool of candidates by incorporating individuals from the private sector with direct insight into the challenges facing local businesses and communities.
The Walvis Bay municipality has long been regarded as a critical hub for Namibia’s economy, given its port and industrial activities that connect the country to regional and global trade. Strengthening local leadership and council capacity is therefore seen as pivotal in sustaining the town’s economic role.
With elections approaching, the composition of local authority lists will be closely watched, as they shape the future direction of towns such as Walvis Bay. For the business sector, the presence of entrepreneurs like Van Schalwyk and Westhuizen signals a push to integrate economic perspectives into governance structures.
