Namibia Marks Key Milestones in the Journey to a Sovereign Currency

Namibia Marks Key Milestones in the Journey to a Sovereign Currency. Long before the first Namibia Dollar was issued, the idea of a national currency stood as a powerful symbol of independence, identity, and economic self-determination. In the early years after gaining independence in 1990, Namibia continued to rely on the South African rand. However, the nation’s leadership had a greater vision: to establish a currency that reflected Namibia’s sovereignty and economic direction.

The journey toward monetary independence began with the formation of a Technical Committee on the National Currency in September 1990, tasked with preparing the foundation for a new, sovereign currency.

On 30 August 1993, the first Namibian banknotes arrived under police escort at Windhoek International Airport and were securely stored at the Bank of Namibia. Just two weeks later, on 14 September 1993, the Namibia Dollar was officially launched by Founding President Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma during a national ceremony at Parliament Gardens.

The currency went into public circulation on 15 September 1993, a historic moment that marked Namibia’s full monetary independence. Complementing the notes, the country’s first coins arrived by sea at Walvis Bay on 13 November 1993 and were introduced to the public the following month, after a national awareness campaign.

As the Bank of Namibia reflects on 35 years of central banking, the birth of the Namibia Dollar remains one of its most defining achievements — a testament to vision, planning, and national pride.
