Windhoek Mayor Launches Citywide Waste Management Drive to Tackle Overflowing Skips and Illegal Dumping

Windhoek Mayor Launches Citywide Waste Management Drive to Tackle Overflowing Skips and Illegal Dumping. In a determined effort to restore cleanliness across the city, Her Worship Cllr. Ndeshihafela Larandja, Mayor of Windhoek, has launched a comprehensive waste management campaign targeting overflowing skip containers and illegal dumping in residential and informal areas.

Prompted by growing concerns from communities about the health and environmental impact of unmanaged waste, the City of Windhoek has deployed tipper trucks to begin immediate clearance of skip containers. The initiative spans all constituencies and is part of a larger mass awareness campaign promoting responsible waste disposal.

The campaign is being led directly by Mayor Larandja, who has emphasized service delivery as a key priority of her administration. During a recent meeting with the Department of Waste Management, she stressed the importance of inclusive solutions that address the needs of all residents—especially those in informal settlements, who are often most affected by poor sanitation.

The campaign is not just about clearing waste but about fostering a culture of accountability. Residents are being encouraged to use skip containers properly and avoid illegal dumping.

So far, clean-up operations have been completed in areas including Shandumbala Pruim Street, Dam Street, Shanghai, Joseph Vambo, Herero Mall in Freedom Square, and N.P. Geingos Street. Upcoming efforts will target Wanaheda, Omoongo Street, Uruguay, Rhine Street, Claudius Kandovazu, and surrounding neighborhoods.
