Youth Councillor Enters Local Government to Challenge Inequality in Hardap. A newly elected councillor for the Landless People’s Movement (LPM) in the Hardap Region says his decision to enter local government is driven by concern over what he describes as the normalisation of inequality, unemployment and exclusion.
William Minnie, 23, was elected to the Mariental Municipal Council during the recently concluded regional council and local authority elections, representing the LPM. His election places him among the youngest councillors currently serving in local government structures in the region.
Speaking on his entry into public office, Minnie said his political involvement is rooted in personal experience and the daily realities faced by residents of Hardap. “I am a young Namibian shaped by the lived realities of ordinary citizens in Hardap. Unemployment, landlessness, inequality and uneven development,” he said.
Minnie noted that these challenges continue to affect many communities in the region and require direct representation at local government level. He said his role as councillor presents an opportunity to bring these issues into municipal decision-making spaces where local development priorities are determined.
The Mariental Municipal Council plays a central role in overseeing service delivery, local economic development and community planning within the town. Minnie’s election comes at a time when youth unemployment and access to land remain key issues raised in public discourse, particularly among younger voters.
The Landless People’s Movement has positioned itself as a party focused on land reform, social justice and economic inclusion. Minnie’s election reflects the party’s participation in local authority structures following the recent elections.
As a councillor, Minnie will participate in council deliberations, policy discussions and municipal oversight processes affecting residents of Mariental. He has indicated that his focus will be informed by the concerns raised by communities he represents.
The election results have introduced new voices into local governance in Hardap, with Minnie’s appointment highlighting increased youth representation within municipal leadership structures.
