Windhoek to Host Heritage Mile 2025: A Journey Through History and Culture

Windhoek to Host Heritage Mile 2025: A Journey Through History and Culture. The City of Windhoek’s Tourism Section is set to host Heritage Mile 2025 on Friday, 19 September, under the theme “In the Footsteps of Our Ancestors.” This year’s edition has been reimagined as a Heritage Access Open Day, offering residents and visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in the city’s rich cultural and historical landscape.

The event will bring together twelve Windhoek high schools and three institutions of higher learning, with participants exploring 14 heritage attractions across the capital. Sites along Robert Mugabe Avenue, Hügel Street, and Prof. Kerina Mburumba Street will feature prominently, including iconic museums and lesser-known gems that reflect the stories and struggles that shaped Windhoek’s identity.

Heritage Mile 2025 is designed as a free, family-friendly experience that encourages participants to journey through history at their own pace. Visitors can expect interactive displays, guided reflections, and engaging encounters at key landmarks such as the Leutwein and Commonwealth Cemeteries, which serve as solemn reminders of the torchbearers of Namibia’s past.

The initiative underscores Windhoek’s commitment to making heritage accessible and relevant to younger generations, while also positioning the city as a cultural tourism destination. By involving schools and academic institutions, the event ensures that future custodians of Namibian heritage engage meaningfully with the narratives that define the nation.

The day’s activities will culminate in an evening gathering at the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre, celebrating the convergence of history and culture through dialogue, performances, and reflection.
