Windhoek Launches Public Consultation on Okandundu and Okatunda Township Plans

Windhoek Launches Public Consultation on Okandundu and Okatunda Township Plans. The City of Windhoek today hosted its first public consultation meeting for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the proposed Okandundu and Okatunda townships, situated north of Okuryangava Extension 1. The meeting was held at the corner of Ongava and Ongete Streets in Okuryangava.

Olavi Makuti, Environmental Management Officer, explained that the EIA is a mandatory step before a township can be formally established and approved by the Urban and Regional Planning Board. He emphasized that the process ensures environmental considerations are integrated into urban development planning.

Town Planner Maria Amukugo presented the Council-approved layout plan, noting that while Council has endorsed the design, the EIA must still be completed. She confirmed that once finalised, the assessment will be submitted to the Environmental Commissioner by April 2026 for environmental clearance before township establishment approval can proceed.

Residents and stakeholders were invited to view the proposed layout and raise questions. Concerns were voiced by residents living in environmentally risky areas, who asked about their future. Officials assured them that once approvals are obtained and implementation begins, Council will engage affected residents to determine appropriate solutions.

Members of the public who could not attend are encouraged to register as Interested and Affected Parties (I&APs) and submit comments before 30 March 2026.

Upcoming consultation meetings include:

  • 15 March 2026 – Max Mutongolume
  • 22 March 2026 – Otjomuise
  • 28 March 2026 – New School Site, Farm 1008, Portion of Remainder Farm 508
