Windhoek Hosts Second African Widows’ Summit, Launches Continental Initiative. Windhoek is hosting the second edition of the African Widows’ Summit from September 3rd to 5th, 2025, bringing together stakeholders to discuss the welfare and empowerment of widows across Africa. The annual conference opened today under the theme “Widowhood in Africa: Building a Sustainable Culture.”
A key highlight of the Summit was the launch of the Pan-African Widows Growth and Development Initiative (PAWAGADI), aimed at promoting economic, social, and policy support for widows across the continent. Organisers say the initiative will provide a structured platform to advocate for widows’ rights, enhance their welfare, and recognise their contributions to national and regional development.
The conference offers a forum for dialogue among policymakers, community leaders, non-governmental organisations, and widow representatives. Discussions are expected to address socio-economic challenges, legal protections, and sustainable strategies for improving the quality of life for widows. The Summit also seeks to influence policymaking to ensure widows are included in broader development agendas.
The inaugural African Widows’ Summit was held in Zanzibar, Tanzania in 2024, setting the stage for this second edition to expand on the foundations of advocacy and networking established in the maiden event.
By convening in Namibia’s capital, the Summit also aims to strengthen regional cooperation and knowledge sharing on widowhood issues, highlighting best practices and innovative solutions that can be replicated across African countries.
Organisers emphasised that the conference not only serves as a platform for raising awareness but also as a catalyst for tangible initiatives that empower widows to participate actively in social and economic spheres.
