Windhoek Advances Power Expansion with N$280 Million Substation Project. Sakarias Uunona has led a site visit to the construction of the Khomas Intake Substation in Otjomuise, as the City moves forward with a major infrastructure project aimed at strengthening electricity supply.

The visit, attended by councillors and City officials, provided an update on progress at the site, where construction is underway on a project valued at N$280 million. Funding for the development includes N$208 million from the City of Windhoek and N$72 million contributed by central government.

Once completed, the Khomas Intake Substation will become the City’s second power supply point. The additional capacity is intended to support growing residential areas, along with commercial and industrial development across the العاصمة. The project reflects ongoing efforts to address increasing electricity demand in the capital.

At present, Windhoek relies on the Van Eck Substation as its primary power source. According to project details shared during the visit, the facility has reached its maximum design capacity and cannot be upgraded further to meet future needs.

The managing contractor confirmed during the inspection that construction remains on schedule, with work progressing steadily. Completion of the substation is anticipated by the end of the year.

Following completion, the facility is expected to be commissioned in February 2027, marking a key milestone in the City’s efforts to expand and modernise its energy infrastructure.

The development of the Khomas Intake Substation represents a significant investment in ensuring a more reliable and sustainable electricity supply for Windhoek, as demand continues to grow alongside urban expansion.
