Walvis Bay Gears Up for Namport Nedbank Powerhouse Challenge 2025

Walvis Bay Gears Up for Namport Nedbank Powerhouse Challenge 2025. Walvis Bay is set to host the second edition of the Namport Nedbank Powerhouse Challenge this weekend, following the success of the inaugural event in Lüderitz earlier this year. The two-day multi-sport event features an expanded programme of running and cycling competitions designed for both elite athletes and recreational participants.

The first day will showcase running events, including a 21.1km half-marathon, a 10km race, and a 5km fun run along the scenic Atlantic coastline. Participants are expected to range from professional runners to families and fitness enthusiasts eager to enjoy the unique coastal route. Cycling competitions will also take place on the first day, with mountain biking (MTB) races offering 70km and 35km routes to challenge even the most experienced riders.

Sunday will focus on road cycling races, with distances of 100km and 60km, all sanctioned by the Namibian Cycling Federation to ensure competitive standards and participant safety. Registration remains open online, with late entries accepted today at the Namport Wellness Centre in Walvis Bay from 09:00 to 19:00.

Namport Marketing and Stakeholder Engagement Manager, Cliff Shikuambi, described the Challenge as more than a sporting event. “This initiative is deeply rooted in our corporate social responsibility pillars, creating a platform for community engagement while reinforcing Namport’s identity as a people-centred, progressive national brand,” he said.

The Challenge also delivers socio-economic benefits for Walvis Bay, particularly residents near Dorob National Park, by stimulating local businesses, including accommodation, restaurants, transport services, and informal traders. Organisers highlighted the vital support of the Walvis Bay municipality, law enforcement, and corporate partners like Nedbank Namibia and the Powerhouse Cycling Club in ensuring a smooth and impactful event.

Nedbank Namibia’s Chief Commercial Officer, JG van Graan, emphasised the event’s community value: “This initiative promotes wellness, brings communities together, and decentralises access to sport across Namibia.” The Powerhouse Cycling Club echoed this sentiment, highlighting opportunities for youth and community engagement through cycling.
