UNDP Namibia to Host Final BIOFIN Policy and Institutional Review Workshop

UNDP Namibia to Host Final BIOFIN Policy and Institutional Review Workshop. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Namibia will host the Final Policy and Institutional Review (PIR) Validation Workshop under the Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN), a global programme aimed at transforming how biodiversity is financed and sustained.

Launched in 2012 at the Convention on Biological Diversity COP 11, BIOFIN operates in 132 countries, including Namibia. The initiative seeks to address the biodiversity finance gap by identifying, mobilizing, and managing financial resources to support sustainable development and conservation goals.

Namibia’s participation in BIOFIN reflects the country’s strong commitment to protecting its rich biodiversity, which plays a vital role in food security, livelihoods, and climate resilience. The initiative helps align national strategies with the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) to ensure long-term ecological and economic sustainability.

Under the programme, Namibia has revised the BIOFIN Handbook, contributed to the upcoming UNCBD COP16 discussions, and is conducting a Biodiversity Expenditure Review (BER) to evaluate how funds are currently allocated across biodiversity-related sectors. The Financial Needs Assessment (FNA) and Biodiversity Finance Plan (BFP) will further guide the development of practical financing mechanisms for the country’s biodiversity goals.

Key finance solutions identified through BIOFIN Namibia include environmental fiscal reform, mainstreaming biodiversity into national and sectoral budgets, fostering public-private partnerships, and improving the management of existing funding sources. The initiative also explores innovative tools such as biodiversity offsets and green bonds to attract investment and promote sustainability.

The upcoming Validation Workshop will mark a significant milestone in Namibia’s journey toward implementing effective biodiversity finance strategies, reinforcing the country’s role as a regional leader in sustainable environmental management.
