Namibia Set to Launch First AfCFTA Export, Marking New Era in Continental Trade

Namibia Set to Launch First AfCFTA Export, Marking New Era in Continental Trade. Namibia is preparing to take a significant step into the future of African trade integration with the official launch of its first export consignment under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework. The landmark event is scheduled for June 30, 2025, in Walvis Bay and will be officiated by Honourable Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, Minister of International Relations and Trade.

This marks the beginning of Namibia’s operational participation in the AfCFTA — a flagship initiative of the African Union’s Agenda 2063 — aimed at creating a unified market for goods and services across the continent. With access to over 1.3 billion consumers and a combined GDP of more than US$3.4 trillion, AfCFTA presents immense opportunities for Namibian producers, exporters, and entrepreneurs.

Namibia has shown unwavering commitment to the trade agreement, having signed it on July 2, 2018, ratified it in January 2019, and gazetted its tariff offer on December 20, 2024, to enable trade under AfCFTA rules.

The launch will serve as a strategic milestone for Namibian businesses seeking to expand their market footprint across Africa. Reduced tariffs, streamlined policies, and simplified customs procedures are expected to make Namibian products more competitive regionally.

For exporters, manufacturers, and SMEs, this development promises increased market access, economic diversification, and job creation, particularly in sectors such as agro-processing, manufacturing, and logistics.

The Ministry of International Relations and Trade has reaffirmed its support for local businesses looking to participate in intra-African trade and encouraged them to leverage the AfCFTA framework for long-term growth.
