Namibia Emerges as Prime Destination for Wealthy South Africans Seeking Safety and Investment

Namibia Emerges as Prime Destination for Wealthy South Africans Seeking Safety and Investment. Namibia is attracting increasing numbers of wealthy South Africans, drawn by the country’s reputation for safety, political stability, and investor-friendly policies. Ranked the fourth safest country in Africa by Tanzania-based Altezza Travel, Namibia has seen a net influx of high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) seeking security, permanent residency, and attractive tax benefits.

The ranking, announced in January by Namibia’s Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, reflects the country’s well-developed infrastructure, strong law enforcement, and peaceful society. Ministry spokesperson Romeo Muyunda emphasized that the recognition underscores Namibia’s collective commitment to safety and stability, qualities that appeal to both tourists and investors.

Namibia offers several advantages for property and business investment. It imposes no estate duty and does not levy capital gains tax on private property sales, while its trust laws and Foreign Investment Act provide favorable conditions for asset protection and foreign ownership. Investors with a Certificate of Status Investment can repatriate capital and benefit from simplified employment permits.

Real estate remains a particularly popular avenue for South African investors. Coastal towns such as Swakopmund are in high demand, with residential properties ranging from N$800,000 to N$2.5 million and luxury homes selling for over N$8 million. Proceeds from property sales can be freely repatriated, enhancing Namibia’s appeal. The country also offers residency pathways, including a Retired Persons permit for those over 60 with foreign income, and permanent residency for individuals with a net worth of at least N$4 million, with half invested locally.

Business consultants note that Namibia’s political and economic stability, combined with proximity to South Africa and competitive property prices, makes it an attractive location for entrepreneurs, retirees, and investors seeking long-term wealth protection. The Africa Wealth Report projects Namibia’s millionaire population to grow by 85% by 2033, highlighting its rising prominence as a hub for high-net-worth individuals in Southern Africa.
