Namibia Completes Nationwide Consultations on Space Science and Technology Bill

Namibia Completes Nationwide Consultations on Space Science and Technology BBill. Namibia has concluded more than a month of regional consultations on the proposed Space Science and Technology (SS&T) Bill, with the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture (MEIYSAC) completing the process in Windhoek on Wednesday.

The consultations were conducted across all 14 regions to gather input, concerns and recommendations from the public and stakeholders on the proposed legislation.

The SS&T Bill is intended to establish a legal and institutional framework for the development, regulation and governance of space science and technology activities in Namibia.

It also seeks to promote research, innovation, education and capacity building within the national space sector. According to the Ministry, the proposed framework would further support Namibia’s compliance with international space laws and promote collaboration between government, academia, industry and international partners.

The regional consultations were aimed at ensuring that the proposed legislation is practical, inclusive and responsive to the needs and aspirations of Namibians.

Speaking at the conclusion of the consultations, MEIYSAC Deputy Executive Director for Higher Education, Training, Research and Innovation, Dr Lisho Mundia, described the development of the Bill as an important milestone in Namibia’s efforts to establish a modern legislative framework for space science and technology.

The consultation process involved stakeholders from academia, industry, regulatory bodies and the media.

Following the completion of the consultations, the Ministry will convene a validation workshop. The workshop will provide an opportunity to review and validate the inputs received during the regional engagements and consolidate them into a draft Bill.
