Namibia and Botswana Deepen Ties Ahead of Presidential Summit. Namibia and Botswana have reaffirmed their strong bilateral relationship as senior government officials gathered for the Ministerial Session of the Second Namibia–Botswana Bi-National Commission (BNC) held on 9 October 2025 in Windhoek.
The high-level meeting, co-chaired by Hon. Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, Namibia’s Minister of International Relations and Trade, and Hon. Dr. Phenyo Butale, Botswana’s Minister of International Relations, set the stage for deeper collaboration ahead of the Presidential Summit scheduled for 10 October 2025.
In her opening remarks, Minister Ashipala-Musavyi emphasized the shared priorities of both nations — including economic diversification, industrialization, youth empowerment, and job creation — as key drivers of regional growth. She noted that Namibia and Botswana’s cooperation across sectors such as energy, agriculture, infrastructure, trade, education, science, tourism, culture, defense, and security remains central to promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region.
“Let us engage in purposeful and forward-looking discussions that build on our achievements and identify new avenues of cooperation,” she urged delegates.
Botswana’s Minister Dr. Butale reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening bilateral implementation mechanisms, revealing that 47 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and cooperation agreements currently govern relations between the two countries. He also noted that nine additional instruments covering energy, science, corrections, and labor are ready for signing during this session.
Dr. Butale encouraged technical teams to finalize ongoing negotiations to ensure timely execution of agreed initiatives, underscoring that the BNC platform continues to serve as a model for effective regional diplomacy and partnership.
The outcomes of the Ministerial Session will feed directly into the Presidential Summit, co-chaired by President Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of Namibia and President Adv. Duma G. Boko of Botswana.
