Mutjimagumwe Woodwork Cooperative Launches as NILALEG Flagship in Kavango West

Mutjimagumwe Woodwork Cooperative Launches as NILALEG Flagship in Kavango West. The Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism has officially opened the Mutjimagumwe Woodwork Cooperative in Mpungu constituency, Kavango West region. The inauguration, held on Friday, marked the launch of a flagship project under the NILALEG initiative, aimed at promoting sustainable, nature-based enterprises across Namibia.

Backed by an investment of N$6 million, the Mutjimagumwe Woodwork Cooperative has been operational since 2019 and has already made a significant impact on the local community. To date, it has created 18 jobs, providing employment opportunities in a region where economic activity is limited.

The cooperative focuses on woodworking, making use of local resources to produce items that support both community needs and market demand. Its establishment aligns with broader national goals of creating green jobs, encouraging sustainable resource management, and reducing environmental degradation through innovative community-led enterprises.

The official opening represents a milestone for the NILALEG initiative, which seeks to demonstrate the economic potential of sustainable land management projects. By combining environmental protection with income generation, the initiative showcases how conservation and livelihoods can go hand in hand.

The Mutjimagumwe Woodwork Cooperative is expected to strengthen community resilience while contributing to Namibia’s efforts to diversify its rural economy. The cooperative’s growth will also serve as a model for similar projects nationwide, highlighting how targeted investment and government support can unlock long-term benefits for communities.

The event underscored the importance of partnerships between government, local communities, and development initiatives in achieving sustainable development goals. For Mpungu and Kavango West, the project stands as a symbol of progress, opportunity, and sustainable resource use.
