MTC Launches Buffalo Project to Strengthen Rural Connectivity in Northern Namibia. Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) has unveiled a major initiative aimed at improving rural network coverage and closing digital access gaps across Namibia. The project, known as the Buffalo Project, will begin in the country’s northern regions before expanding nationwide.
The announcement follows the completion of a detailed network audit that examined more than 2,000 kilometers across towns including Outapi, Oshakati, Rundu, and Katima Mulilo. The audit was carried out in partnership with technology provider Huawei and led by MTC’s Chief Technology and Information Officer, Monica Nehemia. Its findings pointed to persistent service challenges in underserved and unserved areas, despite the presence of existing towers.
The study revealed that several towers were historically positioned at low elevations, with limited antenna heights and inadequate access to 4G/LTE technology. These limitations contributed to weak signal quality and inconsistent data services, resulting in increasing customer concerns from rural communities.
Nehemia emphasized that the Buffalo Project represents MTC’s commitment to act on customer feedback with targeted improvements. “Our customers rely on us not just for communication, but also to access opportunities. When coverage gaps persist in areas where infrastructure exists, it becomes our responsibility to investigate and deliver solutions,” she said.
As part of the rollout, MTC will address coverage issues by raising tower heights, relocating infrastructure where necessary, expanding 4G LTE access, and enhancing reliability across rural towns. The initial focus is on northern Namibia, with the long-term plan to extend improvements across the rest of the country.
By investing in infrastructure upgrades, MTC aims to strengthen its role as Namibia’s leading digital enabler, providing reliable connectivity that supports education, business, and community development in underserved areas.
