King’s Baton Relay Brings Commonwealth Spirit to Namibia

King’s Baton Relay Brings Commonwealth Spirit to Namibia. Walvis Bay became the stage for a historic moment on 25 September 2025 as the King’s Baton Relay touched down in Namibia, marking the country’s participation in the countdown to the 2026 Commonwealth Games set for Glasgow, Scotland.

The Baton, which began its global journey in March at Buckingham Palace, is travelling through more than 70 Commonwealth nations and territories. It carries a message of unity and sportsmanship from the Head of the Commonwealth, symbolizing the shared values of friendship, solidarity, and inclusivity that underpin the Games.

Namibia’s coastal town welcomed the relay with activities that showcased both sporting excellence and environmental responsibility. Olympian Philip Seidler gave the event a memorable start by swimming the Baton to shore through a colony of seals, before handing it to athletes and para-athletes. From the Marina, the Baton’s journey continued along the lagoon, stopping at Flamingo Primary School, the Sunshine Centre, and concluding the day at Independence Beach. There, participants engaged in an ocean conservation session and a beach clean-up, linking the relay to broader sustainability goals.

The Baton will next travel inland to Windhoek, where it will be formally presented at Parliament (National Assembly) on Tuesday. The Namibian leg will end with a closing ceremony at the British High Commissioner’s residence on Saturday.

The arrival of the Baton reflects Namibia’s active role in the global sporting community while highlighting the values of inclusivity and environmental stewardship. It also inspires excitement as the nation joins the world in preparing for the 23 July – 2 August 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Namibia’s participation underscores the importance of using sport as a unifying platform, bridging communities, and empowering youth through athletic and cultural exchange.
