Government Commits N$10 Million to Bring Back Namibia’s National Music Awards

Government Commits N$10 Million to Bring Back Namibia’s National Music Awards. The Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture has announced a N$10 million investment to revive the Namibian Annual Music Awards (NAMAs) following a six-year break.

In a statement, the ministry said it is leading the return of the awards to ensure continued recognition of Namibia’s musical talent and cultural creativity. The NAMAs have historically served as a major platform for celebrating achievements in the country’s music industry.

Ministry Executive Director Mbumba Haitengela said the awards have a long history of honouring artists, tracing back to earlier eras of national music recognition, including the Sanlam Music Awards and later the Namibian Music Awards.

According to Haitengela, the revival forms part of broader efforts to support the development of the local music industry. He said the initiative aims to encourage emerging artists while also highlighting the role of music in strengthening national identity and contributing to nation-building.

The ministry indicated that the funding will support the re-establishment of the awards programme, although specific allocations within the budget were not detailed.

Further information, including event dates, host venues, categories, and participation guidelines, has not yet been released. The ministry said these details will be shared once administrative and logistical preparations have been completed.

The return of the NAMAs is expected to reintroduce a national platform dedicated to recognising artistic achievement in music, bringing together performers, industry professionals and audiences in a celebration of Namibian talent. No timeline has been confirmed for when the first revived awards ceremony will take place.
