Clean-Up Wednesdays at Oshetu Market Promote Hygiene and Community Responsibility

Clean-Up Wednesdays at Oshetu Market Promote Hygiene and Community Responsibility. The City of Windhoek’s Oshetu Community Market, popularly known as Single Quarters Kapana, continues to demonstrate the power of shared responsibility through its weekly clean-up initiative. Every Wednesday, the iconic market temporarily closes its doors to undergo a thorough cleaning, ensuring a hygienic and welcoming environment for vendors and customers alike.

The clean-up process begins as early as 05h00, led by a dedicated cleaning contractor. By 06h00, market vendors join in to clean their individual stalls and surrounding spaces. The exercise usually wraps up between 10h00 and 11h00, but continues for as long as needed to ensure the area is spotless before reopening.

While some vendors have expressed concerns about the temporary closure’s effect on business, the City maintains that the weekly cleaning is essential for maintaining public health standards and preserving the market’s reputation as a safe, vibrant trading space.

There have been instances where customers arrive before cleaning is completed and find wet floors, which may give the false impression that cleaning was not done. However, city officials emphasise that the market is cleaned diligently each week.

The City of Windhoek commended vendors for their cooperation and called on all residents and customers to play their part in maintaining the market’s cleanliness. Proper disposal of waste, especially foam plates and food containers, remains a key concern.

As one of Windhoek’s most beloved cultural and culinary hubs, Oshetu Market represents more than just a place to buy and sell—it’s a community symbol. Keeping it clean is a shared responsibility that contributes to public health, tourism, and community pride.
