Bank of Namibia Launches Upgraded Banknotes and New Coin Series

Bank of Namibia Launches Upgraded Banknotes and New Coin Series. The Bank of Namibia has officially released its upgraded Namibia Dollar banknotes and a newly designed coin series, unveiled in Mariental on 30 September 2025. The updated currency will be available at banks and ATMs nationwide starting today and will circulate alongside existing notes and coins at equal value.

The upgraded banknotes feature enhanced security elements, including advanced anti-counterfeiting technology and tactile marks to assist the visually impaired. In addition to these functional upgrades, the new designs highlight Namibia’s economic strengths and cultural heritage.

The newly issued coin series offers a fresh perspective on Namibia’s growth story, with each denomination symbolising a different aspect of the nation’s identity and development. The Bank of Namibia emphasised that the reimagined currency serves not only as a medium of exchange but also as a reflection of national pride and progress.

Governor of the Bank of Namibia, Johannes !Gawaxab, stated that the launch underscores the central bank’s responsibility to maintain a secure and efficient currency system. The move aligns with international best practices in currency management, ensuring that Namibia remains ahead in terms of security and usability standards.

For the business community and general public, the introduction of upgraded notes and coins represents continuity and stability, as both the new and existing series will hold equal legal tender value. This ensures a smooth transition while also enhancing trust in Namibia’s financial system.
