Bank of Namibia Governor Reflects on Five-Year Tenure in Final Staff Address. Bank of Namibia Governor Dr Johannes !Gawaxab delivered his final staff address last Friday, marking the close of a five-year tenure defined by institutional strengthening, financial system reforms and operational renewal. Speaking to employees across the central bank, Dr !Gawaxab expressed deep appreciation for the Bank’s workforce, acknowledging their professionalism, integrity and commitment during a period shaped by global and domestic challenges.

During his remarks, the Governor reflected on several initiatives that were implemented under his leadership and now form part of the Bank’s long-term foundation. Among these is the modernisation of the national payment system, which includes Instant Payment Namibia, designed to improve efficiency, accessibility and reliability for consumers and businesses.

He also highlighted the introduction of upgraded banknotes and a new coin series, a process aimed at enhancing security features and supporting the country’s currency management framework. Another key milestone referenced was the establishment of the Welwitschia Sovereign Wealth Fund, created to support economic resilience and long-term national savings.

The Governor noted strengthened oversight across the financial system as an essential component of safeguarding stability, ensuring that regulatory structures remain responsive to evolving conditions and emerging risks.

As Dr !Gawaxab concluded his final staff meeting, he emphasised that the progress achieved during his tenure reflects collective effort. He expressed confidence in the Bank of Namibia’s ability to continue meeting its mandate, describing the institution as strong, stable and prepared for the next chapter.

Throughout the address, Dr !Gawaxab underscored that the achievements of the past five years were made possible by the shared dedication of the Bank’s employees, who navigated complex periods with resilience and professionalism.
