Windhoek Gymnasium Lions Test Strength on Japan Rugby Tour

Windhoek Gymnasium Lions Test Strength on Japan Rugby Tour. The Windhoek Gymnasium U19 first-team squad, known as the Lions, is relishing the challenge of their international rugby tour in Japan, viewing it as a crucial step in their development ahead of the Momentum Namibian Secondary Schools Rugby (NSSR) league season starting in June.

The Lions are competing in the 27th Sanix World Youth Rugby Tournament in Fukuoka, on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu. Over the course of the tour, they are scheduled to play five matches against elite opposition, including some of the strongest schools rugby sides in the world.

The physical intensity and fast-paced style of play have tested the Namibian side at every turn. While match results are important, the primary focus remains on growth, learning, and long-term team development. Each game has sharpened decision-making, improved defensive organization, and built resilience under sustained pressure.

One player reflected: “We knew coming here that it wouldn’t be easy, but that’s exactly why we’re here. Every match pushes us to improve, and we’re growing as a team with every game we play.”

Coaches Jaco Engels, Vince Dreyer, and Mauritz Thirion have reinforced the message that exposure to elite opposition is more valuable than short-term victories. Facing different styles and higher-tempo rugby is helping players refine their skills, strengthen teamwork, and gain confidence in demanding situations.

Beyond the field, the Lions have embraced the cultural exchange, engaging positively with other schools and representing Windhoek Gymnasium with pride. Supporters back home in Namibia have praised the tour as an investment in the team’s future success rather than a simple win-loss exercise.

Windhoek Gymnasium is participating for the second consecutive year, joining seven other international schools alongside eight Japanese teams, including Downlands College (Australia), Exeter College (England), and Rotorua Boys High School (New Zealand).
