Windhoek Elders Honoured at Mayoral Lunch. The City of Windhoek hosted the 2026 Mayoral Elders’ Lunch at the Moses Garoeb Constituency, celebrating senior citizens as pillars of wisdom, guidance, and stability within the community.

Delivering remarks at the event, Cllr Hitjevi Tjihuiko emphasized the importance of protecting and respecting elders, noting that their life experiences continue to shape Windhoek’s identity and future. “Our elders are the heart of our communities. We must ensure they are cared for with dignity, especially as many still face vulnerability and hardship,” he said.

The gathering provided an opportunity to reflect on Namibia’s journey since independence, highlighting how unity has brought people from diverse backgrounds together. Elders were recognized not only for their contributions to family and community life but also for their role in preserving cultural heritage and strengthening social cohesion.

The City expressed gratitude to its development partners whose contributions made the event possible. Support included the provision of food hampers and refreshments, demonstrating a shared commitment to community upliftment and social well-being.

Speaking on behalf of fellow beneficiaries, Elder Ndeshihafela Phillipus thanked the City of Windhoek and its partners for their continued support. “We appreciate that the City always remembers us. This gesture shows that our contributions are valued,” she said.

The Mayoral Elders’ Lunch underscored the City’s dedication to fostering inclusivity and ensuring that senior citizens remain central to community development. By honouring elders, the initiative reinforces the importance of intergenerational solidarity and the collective responsibility to safeguard their welfare.

The event concluded with renewed calls for collaboration across sectors to strengthen social support systems, ensuring that Windhoek’s elders continue to live with dignity and respect.
