Namibia’s Banking Sector Unites to Strengthen Defences During Fraud Awareness Week. Namibia’s financial sector marked International Fraud Awareness Week with a high-level engagement hosted by FNB and RMB Namibia, bringing industry leaders together to confront the rising threat of fraud and cybercrime. The session focused on emerging risks, evolving criminal tactics and the collective strategies needed to safeguard the country’s financial ecosystem.
The engagement drew key players from the banking, regulatory and private-sector communities, all aligned in their goal of strengthening national resilience. Discussions centred on practical intelligence sharing, early detection mechanisms and the importance of building systems robust enough to withstand increasingly sophisticated attacks.
FirstRand Namibia CEO Conrad Dempsey emphasised that cybercrime has shifted from occasional incidents to an ongoing challenge demanding constant vigilance. He noted that fraud and digital attacks undermine the foundation of trust that supports both business stability and consumer confidence. “Fraud and cybercrime are no longer occasional disruptions; they are persistent, sophisticated threats that strike at the very foundation of trust on which our businesses and financial systems depend,” he said.
Participants also highlighted the need for stronger public awareness, particularly as scammers continue to exploit human error and digital vulnerabilities. With more Namibians relying on online banking, mobile payments and electronic transactions, educating customers has become an essential line of defence.
The meeting reinforced the message that no single institution can combat fraud alone. Coordinated efforts, transparent information-sharing and cross-industry partnerships remain the most effective tools for reducing exposure and responding swiftly when threats arise.
As International Fraud Awareness Week continues to draw attention to global digital risks, Namibia’s financial sector is using the moment to strengthen its commitment to building a secure, trusted environment for consumers and businesses alike.
