Katjinakatji Learners Write Exams Without Proper Furniture as Community Calls for Urgent Action

Katjinakatji Learners Write Exams Without Proper Furniture as Community Calls for Urgent AAction. Learners at Katjinakatji Senior Secondary School have been forced to sit on broken furniture – and in some cases stand – while writing their Grade 8 final exams, prompting concerns from parents, teachers, and community members over learning conditions at the school.

The situation came to light after images and reports circulated showing pupils struggling through examinations without adequate desks or chairs. Community members have described the conditions as unacceptable, especially during a period as critical as final exams.

Responding to the concerns, Kavango West regional education director Pontianus Musore confirmed that furniture shortages had affected the school. He noted that the region has already begun addressing the issue, saying 100 repaired chairs were delivered back to the school, with additional furniture expected by tomorrow.

Musore stated that efforts are underway to ensure that all learners write their exams in a more conducive environment as repairs continue. While progress is being made, the director acknowledged that the shortage of functional school furniture is a broader challenge across several schools, linked to aging infrastructure and high usage over time.

Parents and community representatives have urged authorities to fast-track the delivery of the remaining furniture, emphasizing that exam conditions significantly influence learner performance and well-being. They further called for long-term investment in school infrastructure to prevent recurring shortages.

The incident has renewed national discussion about resource gaps in public schools, highlighting the need for consistent maintenance and timely procurement to support quality education.
