Beukes and Nepando Claim First Titles at Bank Windhoek Namibian Open. Windhoek played host to a major milestone in regional chess as International Master (IM) Dante Beukes and Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Jolly-Joice Nepando were crowned champions of the Bank Windhoek Namibian Open. The event marked the first Namibian Open titles for both players, adding to their growing reputations in the sport.
The Namibian Open, organised by the Namibia Chess Federation (NCF) under the auspices of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), is regarded as the federation’s flagship tournament. This year’s edition brought together over 80 players from Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe, highlighting the event’s growing stature in Southern Africa.
Competitors battled across several categories, including the Open, Women’s, Junior and Cadet sections. Beyond trophies and recognition, the tournament offered participants the chance to secure crucial rating points, a key factor in advancing within the international chess ranking system.
For Beukes, achieving victory as an International Master underscored his steady rise in the competitive chess scene, while Nepando’s success in the women’s category reinforced her position as one of the country’s most promising female players. Their performances were celebrated not only as personal triumphs but also as markers of progress for Namibian chess.
The Namibia Chess Federation noted that the tournament’s success reflected both strong local interest in chess and the importance of regional collaboration. By attracting players from neighbouring countries, the event created a platform for competitive growth and cultural exchange within the sport.
