Cleanergy to Invest N$50 Billion in Arandis Green Hydrogen Project, Advancing Namibia’s Renewable Energy Goals

Cleanergy to Invest N$50 Billion in Arandis Green Hydrogen Project, Advancing Namibia’s Renewable Energy Goals. Cleanergy Solutions has announced a landmark investment of N$50 billion for the construction of a large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production facility in Arandis, marking a major step forward in Namibia’s renewable energy ambitions.

The planned facility will be developed on 2,400 hectares of land and feature 900 megawatts of solar power and 500 megawatts of electrolysis capacity, with an annual production target of 200,000 tonnes of ammonia. This large-scale initiative forms a key part of Namibia’s green hydrogen strategy, complementing existing developments at Walvis Bay.

Speaking at a high-level stakeholder conference in Walvis Bay, Deputy Minister of Urban and Rural Development Evelyn Nawases-Taeyele commended the progress made through Namibia’s partnership with Belgian firm CMB.TECH, noting its role in positioning Namibia as a global innovator in the green hydrogen space.

The country’s first hydrogen production and refuelling facility, known as Hydrogen Dune, is already operational in Walvis Bay. The pilot site, valued at N$600 million and partially funded by Germany’s Ministry of Education and Research, serves maritime transport and includes Namibia’s first hydrogen academy.

Eike Krafft, Managing Director of Cleanergy Solutions, highlighted ongoing tests with hydrogen-powered trucks, generators, tractors, and an upcoming hydrogen locomotive. Plans are also underway for a 55,000-tonne ammonia storage terminal and a multi-purpose port utility vessel at Walvis Bay.

Arandis Town Council CEO Stanley Norris confirmed the council’s approval of the land and strategic framework for the plant, describing the project as a turning point for the town. “This signals a shift from light to heavy industry in Arandis, primarily powered by solar energy,” said Norris.
