MoHSS Strengthens Mental Health Services in Kunene and Ohangwena Regions

MoHSS Strengthens Mental Health Services in Kunene and Ohangwena Regions. The Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS), in collaboration with I-TECH Namibia and the Office of the Prime Minister, has embarked on a strategic mission to enhance mental health services within the country’s Primary Health Care (PHC) system.

This week, teams are stationed in the Kunene and Ohangwena Regions conducting a Technical Supervisory Support Visit aimed at strengthening the integration of mental health care into existing PHC facilities. The initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure accessible, inclusive, and quality mental health services across all levels of healthcare in Namibia.

Alongside the technical support mission, the MoHSS is rolling out an Awareness-Raising Campaign on Mental Health and Suicide Prevention. This outreach initiative is focused on engaging communities directly—encouraging open dialogue, increasing awareness, and promoting help-seeking behaviors.

By addressing stigma and misinformation, the campaign aims to create safer, more supportive environments for individuals facing mental health challenges. Community members are encouraged to speak up, support one another, and understand that mental well-being is a key component of overall health.

Officials noted that integrating mental health services at the primary level not only improves access but also helps in early identification and intervention, which are critical to saving lives and improving long-term outcomes.
