Namib Desert and Beyond: Rain Brings Relief Across Namibia

Namib Desert and Beyond: Rain Brings Relief Across Namibia. Recent rainfall across Namibia has brought much-needed relief to various regions, with the typically arid Namib Desert experiencing a rare and significant downpour.

Palmwag Lodge & Camp recorded 14mm of rainfall, with the Uniab River flowing past the lodge—a remarkable sight for an area accustomed to dry conditions. Further south, Gondwana Namib Park experienced flash floods followed by steady drizzles. The Namib Desert Lodge received up to 26mm of rain, while The Desert Grace recorded an impressive 35mm.

Ephemeral rivers in the west, including the Tsondab, Tsauchab, and Uniab rivers, surged for the first time in three years. These river flows are crucial for replenishing groundwater and supporting local ecosystems.

The Gondwana Kalahari Park also welcomed rainfall, with some areas receiving up to 23mm. Meanwhile, Gondwana Canyon Park recorded 4mm of rain this past week, with hopes remaining high for further showers to aid the region.

The widespread rainfall has been celebrated as a much-needed boost for Namibia’s arid landscapes, benefiting both wildlife and vegetation. Farmers and conservationists remain hopeful that the rainy season will continue to bring relief across the country.
