Namibia Halts Sports Events to Honor Late President Sam Nujoma. The Namibian government has announced a suspension of all sports events as the country mourns the passing of its founding president, Sam Nujoma. However, athletes are still permitted to continue training during this period.
Nujoma, a key figure in Namibia’s liberation struggle, passed away in Windhoek on Saturday at the age of 95. While authorities have not yet specified how long the mourning period will last, they decided on Sunday to halt all sports activities until further notice. The official announcement was made on Monday.
Despite the suspension of events, the Ministry of Sport clarified that training sessions and other non-spectator activities could proceed as usual.
Sports organizations have already begun adhering to the directive. Netball Namibia informed its stakeholders about the changes via social media, while MTC Namibia announced the indefinite postponement of the MTC Maris Cup semi-finals, which were originally scheduled for this weekend in Mariental.
In a statement, the ministry urged all sports federations, associations, and event organizers to comply with the suspension as a mark of respect for Nujoma’s legacy.
