Namibia Applies for N$2.8 Billion from Climate Fund to Boost Green Hydrogen Projects. Namibia has officially applied for US$150 million (approximately N$2.8 billion) from the Climate Investment Fund to advance its green hydrogen ambitions. The application, confirmed by Green Hydrogen Commissioner James Mnyupe, is part of the country’s larger strategy to establish itself as a global player in sustainable energy production.

The Climate Investment Fund allows for up to US$250 million in funding for private sector investments, and Namibia is hopeful for a positive response by the second quarter of 2025. This funding will be key to supporting the development of green hydrogen infrastructure, including key projects like the Hylron production facility, which is set to begin operations by the end of February. The facility aims to produce five tonnes of green iron per hour, powered by a 25-megawatt solar plant coupled with 13.4 megawatts of battery storage.

In addition to the Hylron facility, several other green hydrogen projects in Namibia are advancing rapidly. The Hyphen project is expected to begin its feasibility studies soon, while a new ammonia bunkering facility is planned for construction in the near future. Furthermore, Hydrogène de France (HDF) Energy Namibia is moving forward with plans to develop a renewable energy power plant in Erongo, combining solar and hydrogen production to supply power to the Swakopmund municipality.

These projects represent a significant step toward Namibia’s goal of becoming a leader in green hydrogen production, not only for local use but also for international export. As the country moves forward with its ambitious plans, the Climate Investment Fund’s support will play a crucial role in scaling up these projects.

According to AllAfrica.com, this funding is expected to help push several green hydrogen initiatives into full-scale operation, marking a pivotal year for Namibia’s renewable energy sector.
