Tsumeb Smelter Halts Operations Amid Global Copper Market Strain

Tsumeb Smelter Halts Operations Amid Global Copper Market Strain. The Sinomine Resources Group, owners of the Tsumeb smelter, has announced that copper processing operations at the facility will be suspended and the plant will be placed under care and maintenance.

The decision follows mounting pressure on copper smelters worldwide, driven by an increase in global smelting capacity that has outpaced the supply of copper concentrate. This imbalance has led to a notable decline in treatment and refining charges (TCRCs), a key source of revenue for smelters.

According to the company, these market conditions have made it difficult to maintain cost-effective operations at Tsumeb. In response, Sinomine is now aiming to cut overall costs by 30 to 40 percent.

As part of the transition process, the company announced that it will introduce a voluntary separation scheme for employees. Further details regarding the timeline and next steps are expected in due course.

The Tsumeb smelter has long played a significant role in Namibia’s mining and industrial sectors. Its temporary closure marks a major development for the local economy and for the country’s position in the regional copper processing landscape.
