Windhoek Launches Backyard Gardening Training to Strengthen Food Security. The Mayor of Windhoek, Cllr Ndeshihafela Larandja, has officially launched the Mayoral Backyard Gardening Training at Farm Okukuna in Goreangab, an initiative designed to strengthen food security and promote community self-sufficiency.
The training, which forms part of the broader Mayoral Backyard Gardening Project, aims to equip residents with the practical knowledge and tools to grow their own fruits and vegetables. The initiative seeks to address the impact of rising food prices and limited access to nutritious produce, while encouraging sustainable urban farming practices.
Speaking at the launch, Mayor Larandja underscored the importance of community-driven initiatives in advancing food security and sustainability. “This programme represents our collective commitment to creating resilient, food-secure communities. It’s about empowering residents to take ownership of their food sources and building a culture of self-reliance,” she said..
The project is part of the City’s broader vision to promote urban agriculture, reduce dependency on imported produce, and encourage environmentally sustainable practices that improve livelihoods at the grassroots level.
