Windhoek Expands Power Access with N$33 Million Electrification Drive. The City of Windhoek has launched its 2025/2026 Electrification Project, targeting expanded electricity access for more than 1,300 households across informal settlements in Windhoek.

Valued at approximately N$33 million, the project is being jointly funded by the municipality and central government through the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development and the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to improve access to essential services in underserved communities.

Areas set to benefit from the rollout include Okahandja Park, Mix, Babylon, Otjomuise, and the Havana Relocation Centre. The project aims to enhance living conditions by providing reliable electricity access to households that have previously lacked formal connections.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Sakarias Uunona described electricity as a key driver of social and economic development. He noted that access to power supports daily activities within households while also enabling opportunities for small businesses and education.

The electrification programme, first introduced in 2018, has already connected more than 8,000 households across informal settlements in the city. The latest phase builds on this progress, extending infrastructure to additional communities.

The City of Windhoek has indicated that the initiative is aligned with its ongoing focus on inclusive urban development. By expanding access to electricity, the municipality aims to support safer living environments and improved service delivery.

The rollout is expected to contribute to broader development outcomes within the targeted areas, as the city continues to invest in infrastructure designed to meet the needs of a growing urban population.
