Windhoek Bus Passengers Urged to Switch to Smart Cards by 18 August

Windhoek Bus Passengers Urged to Switch to Smart Cards by 18 August. The City of Windhoek has issued a final reminder to all bus passengers to switch to the new smart card payment system by Monday, 18 August 2025. From that date, cash payments will no longer be accepted on any City of Windhoek buses, and passengers will be required to use a Bus Smart Card to pay for their trips.

In preparation for the transition, the municipality has arranged a special service day on Saturday, 16 August, to make it easier for residents to obtain their new travel cards. Between 09:00 and 13:00, four municipal offices will be open to assist passengers in acquiring their cards free of charge and loading the necessary credit.

According to the City of Windhoek, this initiative aims to ensure a smooth shift to the cashless payment system, while also giving residents additional time to prepare ahead of the deadline. Even those unable to visit on Saturday can still get their cards during normal office hours in the week.

The municipality has encouraged passengers not to delay the process to avoid disruptions to their travel. “Don’t miss out – get your card now and travel cash-free,” the public notice states.

This move is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to modernise public transport services and streamline payment processes. By adopting the smart card system, officials expect faster boarding times and a more convenient payment method for daily commuters.
