Telecom Namibia and Usakos Partner to Launch Smart City Fibre Network. Telecom Namibia and the Usakos Town Council have taken a significant step toward making Usakos a digitally connected “smart city,” formalising their partnership in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed today. The agreement commits both parties to roll out high-speed fibre infrastructure throughout the town, marking a major investment in local digital capabilities telecom.

Under the partnership, Telecom Namibia will extend its fibre network in Usakos, with expected internet speeds of 8 Mbps to 120 Mbps—delivered through the same model successfully deployed in Oranjemund. This relocation of infrastructure aims to benefit multiple sectors, from education and healthcare to small business development, by enabling advanced connectivity.

Telecom Namibia CEO Stanley Shanapinda highlighted the importance of reliable digital infrastructure in smart cities, citing the company’s experience in Oranjemund—where over 67 km of fibre were laid and integrated into a 13,000 km national network—as proof of the model’s success. He called the Usakos MoU “a blueprint” for future smart city rollout across Namibia.

Erongo Regional Governor Natalia /Goagoses described the initiative as essential for regional growth, urging communities to support infrastructure protection against potential vandalism or theft telecom. Meanwhile, Usakos Town Council CEO Lesley Grand Goreseb said the project marks a “turning point” for the town, promising “unparalleled digital opportunities and higher quality of life”.

As engagement between local government and ICT providers continues to gain momentum, Usakos sets a benchmark for collaborative urban development through technology. The agreement signals Telecom Namibia’s intent to replicate its smart city success across the country—creating digital environments ready for economic growth and business diversification.
