Ruacana Hydropower Station Opens Flap Gate Amid Rising Water Levels. Ruacana Hydropower Station has opened its flap gate to regulate the increased water flow from the Cunene River, following above-normal rainfall in southern Angola’s catchment area. The move comes as part of NamPower’s efforts to safely manage the surge in water levels.
As of Monday, 24 March 2025, the station has been releasing approximately 800 cubic meters per second (800,000 litres per second) into the Kunene River. This has transformed Ruacana Falls into a breathtaking spectacle, attracting locals and visitors eager to witness the powerful cascade.
Authorities have issued flood warnings to communities downstream, urging caution as water levels are expected to remain high for at least two weeks. The last time such significant water volumes were recorded in the Kunene River was in 2020.
