Otjomuise Residents Briefed on Land Allocation and Electricity Rollout Plan

Otjomuise Residents Briefed on Land Allocation and Electricity Rollout Plan. Residents of Otjomuise Erf 3375 received a long-awaited update today from the City of Windhoek’s Basic Services Committee regarding land ownership and electricity connection plans.

The update follows a deputation made by the residents to the City Council on June 17, 2025, where they formally requested individual land allocations and access to electricity. For the past 15 years, residents have been living on the erf without formal ownership and with only public water taps available.

The Committee, led by Chairperson Alderwoman Fransina Kahungu, visited the site with fellow councillors and officials from key departments to present the City’s proposed way forward. According to the City, Erf 3375 was initially planned to accommodate about 25 households, but is now occupied by approximately 67.

To facilitate the installation of electricity infrastructure, the City plans to relocate about 44 households. Encouragingly, the residents have expressed agreement with the relocation plan, which will enable safe access for electricity lines.

The erf will be subdivided to allocate plots of between 150 and 200 square meters to each household. This marks a significant step toward formalising tenure for the residents, many of whom have lived in the area for over a decade without secure land rights or basic amenities.

City officials emphasised the importance of ongoing community cooperation and reiterated the municipality’s commitment to equitable urban development.
