Namibia’s Daures Village Pioneers Africa’s First Net Zero Green Hydrogen and Farming Hub

Namibia’s Daures Village Pioneers Africa’s First Net Zero Green Hydrogen and Farming Hub. Erongo Region, Namibia – In the heart of Namibia’s arid Erongo region, an ambitious new project is demonstrating what sustainable innovation can look like on African soil. The Daures Green Hydrogen Village, hailed as Africa’s first Net Zero prototype, is combining renewable energy, local food production, and advanced technology in a bold push toward economic and environmental transformation.

Using solar and wind power, the project generates green hydrogen, which is then used to produce ammonia-based fertiliser directly on site. This fertiliser fuels hydroponic farming operations, enabling the cultivation of crops like tomatoes and cucumbers in a region known more for its dryness than its agriculture.

The Daures initiative is more than a clean energy project, it is a living model of African-driven solutions to pressing issues such as food insecurity, fertiliser dependency, and youth unemployment. Its focus on locally integrated systems reflects a growing shift toward homegrown responses that work with, rather than against, the continent’s environmental conditions.

By 2026, the project aims to produce 100 tonnes of green ammonia, harvest 500 tonnes of food, and generate more than 1,000 jobs. These targets signal both economic potential and long-term impact, particularly in rural communities where access to jobs and modern technology has historically been limited.

The Village’s approach also highlights the growing role of hydrogen in Africa’s energy future, not just as a fuel but as a driver of local industry and resilience. With international attention turning to sustainable development models, Daures stands out as a uniquely African answer, scalable, climate-smart, and rooted in real needs.
