Namibian Students Depart for China Under Huawei’s ICT Training Initiative

Namibian Students Depart for China Under Huawei’s ICT Training Initiative. The Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Hon. Emma Theofelus, officially officiated the send-off ceremony for a group of Namibian university students selected to participate in Huawei’s Seeds for the Future programme, held earlier this week.

Funded and organised by Huawei, the Seeds for the Future programme is the company’s flagship global initiative designed to develop the next generation of ICT leaders. The selected Namibian students will travel to China to receive hands-on training in advanced technologies such as 5G, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and cybersecurity.

In her remarks at the ceremony, Minister Theofelus commended the partnership between government and private sector in equipping young people with globally competitive skills. She emphasized the importance of empowering youth in digital technologies as a pathway to Namibia’s economic transformation and future readiness.

The initiative also offers students access to mentorship, cross-cultural exchange, and entrepreneurial development through interactive learning modules and real-world exposure to Huawei’s innovation ecosystem in China. It aims to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical application in the ICT sector.

The programme is aligned with Namibia’s national development priorities, particularly in advancing digital skills and fostering innovation among the country’s youth. It also supports the broader goal of ensuring that Namibia remains competitive in a global digital economy.

Huawei has been running the Seeds for the Future programme globally since 2008, with participation from over 130 countries. The Namibian students’ participation this year marks another step in deepening ICT cooperation between Namibia and China.

The send-off ceremony highlighted the growing emphasis on strategic partnerships to support skills development and drive future-oriented opportunities for Namibia’s young professionals.
