Namibian Juniors Reach Quarter-Finals at ITF U18 Tennis Tour in Maputo. Namibia’s rising tennis talents Mari van Schalkwyk and Israel Dowie have advanced to the quarter-finals of the ITF U18 Junior Tennis Tour, following strong performances in the group stages.

Van Schalkwyk topped the girls’ Group E standings with commanding victories. She defeated Mozambique’s Thais Santos 6-1, 6-0 before overcoming Canada’s Iman Bajramovic 6-2, 6-2. Her consistent play secured her a place in the knockout stage, where she is set to face Simphiwe Malunguza in the quarter-finals. A win would propel her into the semi-finals, marking another milestone in her junior career.

In the boys’ Group A, Dowie also impressed with decisive wins. He overcame Portugal’s Joao Deus 6-3, 6-2 and later dispatched Mozambique’s Rui Tembe 6-0, 6-3 to secure his spot in the last eight. Dowie now faces a challenging quarter-final against Canada’s Park Dohyun, who previously defeated him in the first tournament, denying him a place in the final. The rematch offers Dowie an opportunity to turn the tables and advance further in the competition.

Another Namibian competitor, Joanivia Bezuidenhout, competing in the girls’ Group A, opened her campaign with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory over Mozambique’s Melody Mubanguiane. However, she later fell 6-2, 6-4 to Zimbabwe’s Malunguza, ending her run in the group stage.

The Namibian contingent’s progress in Maputo highlights the growing strength of the country’s junior tennis programme. With Van Schalkwyk and Dowie both reaching the quarter-finals, Namibia has secured representation in the latter stages of the tournament, underscoring the potential of its young athletes on the international stage.
