Namibia Hands Over Strategic Storage Facility to Boost Food Security in Katima Mulilo. Katima Mulilo marked a significant milestone on Thursday, 2 October 2025, as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industries, Mines and Energy (MIME), Hon. Natangue Ithete, presided over the handover of a Namibia Industrial Development Agency (NIDA) storage facility to the Namibia Correctional Service (NCS).
The facility, located in Katima Mulilo, is being leased to the NCS to strengthen its food production programme. This initiative is directly aligned with Namibia’s national objectives of food security, self-reliance, and industrialisation. By providing dedicated storage capacity, the facility enables the NCS to preserve harvested produce, extend shelf life, and minimise post-harvest losses that often undermine agricultural efforts.
Speaking at the handover, Hon. Ithete highlighted the importance of the project in advancing Namibia’s broader economic goals. He noted that ensuring food security is not only about production but also about creating sustainable systems that protect and process food effectively.
The partnership between NIDA and NCS demonstrates how government institutions can work together to unlock long-term value. Beyond food preservation, the facility will also support the processing and distribution of raw materials, creating new opportunities for industrial growth. This investment reflects Namibia’s strategy of fostering resilience within key sectors while supporting local production capacity.
For the Namibia Correctional Service, the facility enhances its ability to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s food security agenda. The NCS food production programme has grown steadily in recent years, and the addition of storage infrastructure ensures greater efficiency in operations.
