Namibia Breaks Ground on Biotechnology Facility to Boost Local Industry and Exports. In a move set to accelerate Namibia’s industrialization agenda, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industries, Mines, and Energy, Hon. Natangue Ithete, officially launched the construction of a biotechnology production facility in Henties Bay last week.
The facility, operated by Vigor Biotechnology, will specialize in producing high-value seal and nut oils rich in omega-3 fatty acids. These oils are aimed at the global pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and health supplements markets, positioning Namibia as a competitive player in the bioeconomy sector.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Minister Ithete said the development reflects a strategic commitment to value addition, sustainable resource management, and economic diversification under Vision 2030 and the Fifth National Development Plan (NDP5).
The plant seeks to transform the country’s growing seal population — traditionally viewed as an environmental management challenge — into an economic asset. The project is expected to create jobs, promote local skills development, and empower women and youth in the coastal region.
Minister Ithete emphasized the importance of sustainable operations, urging that seal harvesting be conducted under strict scientific guidance, with adherence to regulated quotas and international environmental standards.
Local SMEs are also expected to gain from the project, with opportunities in construction, logistics, packaging, and maintenance forming part of the broader value chain.
