NAMCOR Begins Production Testing at Kavango West-1X Discovery Well. The National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (NAMCOR), through its upstream subsidiary NAMCOR Exploration and Production (Pty) Ltd, has announced the commencement of production testing procedures at the Kavango West-1X discovery well, located under Petroleum Exploration Licence (PEL) 73.
PEL 73 is operated by ReconAfrica (70%), with partners BW Kudu (20%) and NAMCOR E&P (10%), forming a strategic joint venture aimed at unlocking Namibia’s hydrocarbon potential within the onshore Kavango Basin.
NAMCOR confirmed that all necessary regulatory approvals have been secured, and operations are now active. Work crews are on site preparing the well for testing, with encouraging technical data observed thus far.
“Production testing will be conducted across six targeted zones, covering both the Huttenberg and deeper Elandshoek formations, with a total prospective interval of roughly 345 metres to be tested,” NAMCOR stated.
Mtundeni Ndafyaalako, Acting Managing Director of NAMCOR, emphasized the importance of local participation in the project. “We are pleased with the integration of local suppliers into these operations, as capacity building within Namibia remains central to the sustainable growth of the industry,” he said.
The testing phase represents a critical step in evaluating the commercial viability of the Kavango West-1X discovery. It also reflects Namibia’s growing role in regional energy exploration, with the Kavango Basin increasingly seen as a frontier area for hydrocarbon development.
NAMCOR’s involvement highlights the corporation’s commitment to advancing national interests in the energy sector, while ensuring that local communities and suppliers benefit from opportunities created by exploration activities.
