Kamatuka Celebrates Historic Nedbank Cup Triumph with Durban City

Kamatuka Celebrates Historic Nedbank Cup Triumph with Durban City. Durban City FC has etched its name into South African football history after clinching their first-ever Nedbank Cup title with a 2-1 victory over TS Galaxy in the final. Among those celebrating is Namibian winger Joslin Kamatuka, who secured his maiden silverware in the South African top-flight since arriving in 2018.

Kamatuka’s journey has seen him play for Cape Umoya, Baroka FC, and Maritzburg United — now rebranded as Durban City FC. Last season, he was instrumental in guiding the club to promotion, finishing as their top goalscorer. Despite battling injuries this campaign, the 34-year-old contributed two goals and played a key role in earlier rounds of the cup before stepping aside to recover from a hamstring injury. He did not feature in the final but expressed joy at the team’s success, saying: “God is great, I’m very happy, man.”

The final itself was a dramatic contest. TS Galaxy took the lead just before halftime after Durban striker Jean Mwambu scored an own goal in the 44th minute. Durban City responded strongly in the second half, with Mfanafuthi Mkhize equalising in the 58th minute. Mwambu redeemed himself by netting the decisive winner in the 72nd minute, sealing the trophy for the Durban-based side.

Since rebranding in August 2024 and relocating from Pietermaritzburg to Chatsworth, Durban City has enjoyed a remarkable rise. They won the Motsepe Foundation Championship to secure automatic promotion and have impressed in their debut Premiership season, currently sitting seventh on the log with four games remaining. The Nedbank Cup victory crowns a fairytale 12 months for the club.

Beyond domestic glory, the triumph also secures Durban City’s qualification for the 2026/27 CAF Confederation Cup, offering both the team and Kamatuka the chance to compete on the continental stage next season.
