City of Windhoek Issues Urgent Warning to Prevent Veld Fires. The City of Windhoek has issued a public notice urging residents to take immediate action to protect their properties from the growing threat of veld fires. The warning comes in light of increased vegetation growth due to above-average rainfall, which has resulted in a significant buildup of dry biomass, a major fire risk.
Veld fires, unlike many natural disasters, are often caused by human activity and can be mitigated through proactive community efforts. The City stresses the importance of maintaining a 3 to 6-meter vegetation-free zone around properties, especially those bordering open areas with dry grass and shrubs.
Residents are reminded not to dump garden or flammable waste in veld areas and to utilize designated disposal sites. Keeping a hosepipe within reach, regularly removing leaves and debris from rooftops and gutters, and reporting any fire outbreaks immediately are key measures emphasized in the notice.
The City also outlines strict prohibitions under the Windhoek Fire Brigade Services Regulations (Reg 57[2]), which make it illegal to burn any waste in the open air. Violators may face fines of up to N$4,000 or imprisonment for up to 12 months.
Particular attention is given to properties with thatched roofing, which are especially vulnerable. Owners are advised to conduct regular roof inspections, install hosepipes or spray systems, and clear surrounding vegetation. Firebreaks and wetting down the thatch in high-risk conditions are also recommended.
