City of Windhoek Evaluates Ramatex Site for Potential Economic Revival

City of Windhoek Evaluates Ramatex Site for Potential Economic Revival. The City of Windhoek has taken a significant step toward revitalizing the long-dormant Ramatex property, as Mayor Cllr. Ndeshihafela Larandja convened a strategic meeting with internal stakeholders to review the site’s status and assess its future development prospects.

Covering approximately 43 hectares, the Ramatex site was originally leased under a 99-year agreement but became inactive in 2008 after the tenant company entered provisional liquidation. A protracted legal process followed, culminating in a settlement that required the liquidators to dismantle the warehouse and restore the land within three years.

With that deadline now expired, the City is actively reassessing the property’s condition and exploring pathways to convert the area into a productive industrial or commercial zone. Officials say the site holds considerable potential to generate revenue and stimulate employment, two critical needs for the capital city.

During the internal review, City officials also considered a range of development proposals submitted by interested business entities. A site inspection was subsequently conducted to evaluate the current state of the land and understand its redevelopment potential more clearly.

While no final decisions have been announced, the engagement process is part of the City’s broader strategy to attract investment and reimagine underutilized urban spaces. Mayor Larandja emphasized the importance of approaching the project in a transparent and inclusive manner to ensure that future developments serve the city’s long-term interests.

The Ramatex property remains one of the City’s most strategically located assets. As Windhoek seeks to boost its local economy, all eyes will be on the next phase of planning and public consultation.
