City of Windhoek Commits Additional N$353 Million to Repair Weather-Damaged Roads

City of Windhoek Commits Additional N$353 Million to Repair Weather-Damaged Roads. The City of Windhoek has announced a substantial N$353 million funding requirement to address widespread road damage caused by recent heavy rains. This amount is in addition to the city’s annual road maintenance budget and will go toward the restoration of critical infrastructure across the capital.

According to the municipality’s Roads and Stormwater Division, more than 650 streets across Windhoek’s suburbs have been identified with potholes and surface deformities. The damage spans thousands of potholes, many of which pose safety risks for motorists and pedestrians.

To address the backlog, the City has launched a structured, city-wide road maintenance programme aimed at distributing resources fairly across all areas. Two contractors have been appointed to support municipal teams and fast-track the repair process.

Since February 2025, over 26,000 potholes have already been repaired, signalling the City’s proactive response to deteriorating road conditions. In addition, two major bridge culverts, severely damaged by floods, have been earmarked for full reconstruction at an estimated cost of N$30 million.

City officials have emphasized that the road upgrade initiative is essential not only for daily transportation but also for supporting business activity and ensuring public safety.

Motorists and residents are urged to remain patient and vigilant as work continues across multiple zones. The City has reassured the public that every effort is being made to restore road infrastructure efficiently and equitably.

The project forms part of Windhoek’s broader urban resilience and infrastructure development strategy, aimed at strengthening public works and adapting to the increasing impacts of extreme weather.
