Namibia Expands Satellite Monitoring Capability with New Data Receiving SStation. Namibia has officially received the China Aided Satellite Ground Data Receiving Station from People’s Republic of China, marking a new phase in long standing cooperation between the two countries in space related infrastructure and data technology.

The handover took place on 13 February 2026 and follows a bilateral cooperation agreement first signed in 2000 and renewed in 2018. Through the partnership, China provided both technical and financial support for the construction of the China Aided Satellite Ground Data Receiving Station and trained Namibian personnel to operate and manage its systems.

The station strengthens Namibia’s capacity to receive and process satellite data for a range of national functions. Authorities say the facility will support disaster monitoring, national security operations, and sustainable resource management through improved access to real time and high resolution satellite information.

The system is expected to assist with monitoring natural disasters, detecting illegal fishing activity, and supporting mineral exploration. It will also contribute to agricultural monitoring and land use planning. Officials say the data generated will help inform policy development, planning processes, and service delivery across multiple sectors.

The handover ceremony was attended by Elia Ngurare, who received the facility from Zhao Weiping on behalf of Netumbo Nandi Ndaitwah.

Operational responsibility for the station will rest with MEIYSAC, which will oversee its management and ensure continued access to satellite data to support planning, resource monitoring, and national security priorities. Officials say the facility represents a significant addition to Namibia’s technical infrastructure for data driven decision making.
