Windhoek Leaders Mark Human Rights Day and Honour Legacy of Namibian Women. City of Windhoek leaders joined national officials today to commemorate the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a globally recognised milestone that continues to inspire the pursuit of dignity, equality and justice. The event brought together senior government representatives and local leaders who reflected on Namibia’s history and the significance of 10 December.
His Worship Cllr. Sakaria Uunona, Mayor of Windhoek, Her Worship Cllr. Albertina Amutenya, Deputy Mayor, and City of Windhoek Chief Executive Officer Moses Matyayi joined Hon. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, Governor of the Khomas Region, in marking the important occasion.
The commemoration was further elevated by the presence of H.E. Lucia Witbooi, Vice President of the Republic of Namibia, who attended as the special guest. In Namibia, 10 December carries dual meaning. It is celebrated as International Human Rights Day while also recognised as Namibian Women’s Day, a solemn tribute to the courageous women who resisted forced removals from the Old Location in 1959. Their defiance marked a critical moment in the country’s struggle for justice and human dignity.
Among the women remembered is Anna Kakurukaze Mungunda, whose death during the protest made her an enduring national symbol of resistance. Her legacy, formally honoured at Heroes Acre since 2002, continues to inspire generations and stands as a powerful reminder of the price paid for freedom.
Speakers at the event highlighted the importance of safeguarding human rights and honouring those who fought for equality. They also emphasised the responsibility of leaders to uphold these values in service of the nation.
As Namibia reflects on this historic day, the message remains clear: the commitment to human rights and the recognition of women’s contributions are essential pillars of the country’s democratic journey.
